Calacatta Marble Tiles & Slabs
4 Types of Calacatta Marble
What makes Calacatta Marble so sought after?
Beauty and Style
Choosing calacatta marble means introducing natural beauty and exceptional style to your home or workplace.
Distinguishing calacatta from other marbles is its pale base stone. This gives the dynamic veining room to breathe life into your space. Whether you’re looking to add impact and drama or create a gentler aesthetic, there’s a variety of calacatta to suit your needs.
Durability
Forged over millennia within the Apuan mountains, calacatta is one of the more durable marbles on the market.
Finished and sealed, calacatta is non-slip, scratch-resistant, and heat-resistant. With its thick bands of veining, calacatta suffers less from porous inclusion seams. This makes it a great choice for demanding applications such as floor tiles or kitchen benchtops.
Versatility
Owing to its durability naturally paired with a modern look, calacatta is often the first choice for architects and designers looking to get the very best of both worlds.
From boardrooms and luxury hotels to bathrooms and living spaces, calacatta’s clean look makes it usable anywhere. Softer vein varieties can be used to add a sense of calm to a bathroom setting, and slabs with bold inclusions will command attention when bookended or used as a surround.
Adds Value to Your Home
Considered by most to be the benchmark for other marbles, calacatta is recognised as one of the world’s most desirable materials.
The scarcity of calacatta marble, coupled with its elegance, means calacatta is rightfully considered a premium stone. Adding such a rare material to your home can add considerable value, transforming it into a statement piece.
Characteristics of Calacatta Marble:
Colour and Veining
In its purest form, calacatta has thick ribboned veining running diagonally across slabs, set against pure white fields.
Veins vary in hue from charcoals and slate greys to fawn browns and rich golds. These are typically delineated and clear-cut, giving calacatta its fame. Exceptions occur, however, with some slabs exhibiting soft, snowy fields blurring into subtle veining.
Durability and Hardness
Sealed and treated, calacatta sits among the most durable marbles on the market.
With fewer veining seams than other marbles, sealed calacatta is less likely to stain due to spillages or wear and tear. Depending on finish, calacatta is also highly resistant to scratches and signs of use. This makes it ideal for high-traffic spaces like reception areas.
Finishes
RMS can finish calacatta to your specification, including surface and edges. Surface finishes include honed, polished, brushed, tumbled, and brushed.
Calacatta is typically finished with a high polish to accentuate its bright white fields and contrasting veins. Modern usage sees honed calacatta in vogue, blurring veins and giving a cloud-like appearance.
Availability
Calacatta can only be found in the small region of Carrara, high in the Apuan Mountains of Tuscany, Italy.
This makes the marble exceptionally scarce, even more so than its cousin, Carrara marble. While imitation Calacatta is available, only the real thing possesses distinct light-reflecting properties, truly unique veining, and wondrous natural colours.
Versatility
Noted for versatility as well as its purity of colour, calacatta has been used for a variety of purposes. The whiter tone of calacatta has made it a popular choice for high-end, luxury purposes but now finds itself in domestic settings too as flooring, cladding, worktops, vanities and more.
Maintenance
Calacatta should be cared for like any other marble. This involves:
- Clean up spills quickly: marbles are naturally porous and can stain if spills are left untreated.
- Avoid acidic solutions: etching will occur if acid is left on a marble surface. This includes fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes that can mark natural stone over time.
- Use marble-safe cleaners: harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning sprays can ruin the surface of your marble. Be sure to only use cleaners approved for use on marble that do not contain vinegar or citric acids.
- Maintain the sealer: sealing calacatta and other natural stone helps prevent staining and avoids water retention within the marble. This can preserve the stone for decades and should be done periodically to maintain the level of sealer over time.
